The calendar shows April and spring is upon us. And although the weather in Denmark has been somewhat wintry lately, we are slowly sensing the arrival of brighter and warmer times. April is a life-affirming month that brings light, life and happiness to the vast majority of people.
The birds have begun to sing and the forest to tingle. The anemones are popping up from the forest floor, the beech is springing up and the world around us is coming alive once again, taking on more colors and the fresh air and scent of nature around us are inviting us to get out and about. Spring activates all the senses, and light, air and life make us happy.
Many people experience an improvement in their mood during spring, and the desire to be social increases, after a long period in “winter hibernation”. People crave the light and fresh air, and we Danes are especially known for getting outside as soon as the sun shines! Coffee is enjoyed in the garden, on the balcony, a sidewalk cafe or the playground, we plant new life in the pots as soon as the first night frost is gone and we find the garden furniture or go to the summer house to get ready for a new season. We are drawn to the light – and it is healthy and quite natural.
When spring comes, the days become longer, warmer and brighter. And light in particular has a great impact on our efficiency, happiness and desire to be with other people. It is mentally stimulating when the sun peeks out and it gets warmer, and we associate this time of year with positive experiences, good memories and get “high” with the joy of anticipation.
As we mentioned in the post about sleep last month, using a screen at bedtime is a bad idea. The light from the screen weakens the body's sleep hormone melatonin and it is difficult to fall asleep. The hormone tells the body when it is time to sleep, and this happens, among other things, by the body registering that it has become dark. The light from the screen makes you more awake, and the same thing happens when the days are brighter in the spring. Bright days simply make us more awake and we often feel that we are both more efficient, active and more social throughout the spring and summer.
Let's talk about hormones for a moment. In addition to the weakening of the sleep hormone melatonin, there is also an increase in the hormones dopamine and serotonin. in the brain. The hormones give a feeling of well-being - joy, happiness and energy. And this therefore naturally explains why many people are happier in spring and also why the desire to be more efficient and social in spring increases.
Make sure to get out into the light and breathe in the fresh spring air. Take a deep breath and be present. Engage your senses - listen, smell, see and feel.
Spend the Easter holiday or weekend having your morning or afternoon coffee outside, pack a picnic basket and take your family or friends on a picnic, go on an egg hunt in the garden or a nearby park, go to the beach and get blown away or take a nap under the covers on the terrace and feel the fresh air and let the calm settle around you.
Enjoy it <3
Inspiration for the season
Dress softly, warmly and comfortably when you're going outdoors. Layering on layers of natural materials so you can adapt to the changing temperatures of spring is always a good idea.
Stay warm in the early and sometimes a little chilly spring in cozy and delicious cashmere and jump into casual and comfortably soft linen and crisp organic cotton when the temperatures rise a bit. We love to mix and match the materials and our long-lasting styles - all year round.
